How can you help?

The finances to begin this ministry came from money raised to assist Sharon Queen Rathbone with her treatment of a rare illness that she succumbed to in January, 2012. The Open Door wishes to see this fund perpetuated by seeking financial contributions for this cause throughout the year and participating with Sharon’s family and friends in at least one annual fundraiser. A percentage of the fundraiser will go to support chloangiocarcinoma.org.

Sharon was a strong, vibrant and courageous young woman. She was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County. Her humble upbringing undoubtedly made her the strong woman she became, with a desire to help others. She was the mother of two children Kali and Tyler Putnam and left behind a devoted husband, Ken.

In June 2011, Sharon was diagnosed with Chloangiocarcinoma, a rare cancer of the bile duct. Like so many others Sharon was unable to afford the treatment alone. Her family rose to the occasion and immediately began raising the money for her treatment. Unfortunately, Sharon’s cancer metastasized and sadly she lost her last fight to cancer.

The world lost a beautiful person, inside and out that January day! Sharon’s kind and giving spirit will live on in those she touched and in her family. Consistent with Sharon’s wishes, Gloria Trull (cousin and closest friend), has continued to strive to honor Sharon’s wish to help others increase accessibility to healthcare by establishing “Sharin Care”. Even in death, Sharon continues to help others!

The Open Door is honored to partner in this ministry and keep Sharon’s memory alive to those who come through our doors in need of assistance.
