I work for a local non-profit organization that provides support to children with emotional and behavioral concerns in the community. Because of Open Door Ministries, they were able to help a child in foster care to benefit from a weighted vest. This vest creates a calming effect by reducing the child’s response to stimulus when experiencing meltdowns from anxiety and frustration. Open Door Ministries have utilized their funds to help this child succeed and better cope; I could not be more grateful!
In response to the affordable housing crisis in Haywood County we have joined with others in forming a coalition to provide emergency housing for families who find themselves homeless. Though we have a local shelter to accommodate single persons, we have not solved the problem of parents with children. The need for this population is growing exponentially! You may contribute to this fund by going to our “Donate” page and earmark your gift for Emergency Housing Coalition (EHC).
In addition to having a new manager of the Second Blessing Thrift Shop, Deborah Kasbeer, we also have a new look inside the Second Blessing Thrift Shop. Please come and visit the store and see our beautifully designed thrift shop with a plethora of new or slightly used items available for purchase.
Also don’t forget that you can support those in need in our community by donations of items to the Second Blessing Thrift Shop.
Hours of operation: Monday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
One annual event that is always touches the lives of many families is our Open Door Christmas Toy Shop. In conjunction with Toys for Tots we assemble a one day store full of toys and food for families who struggle to have a meaningful Christmas. This year we were able to include a turkey for all of our families. Our dining room becomes a place of joy as parents come and shop for their own kids.
This past year our Christmas Toy Shop was able to reach out a helping hand to 60 children. Our volunteers are elated to be of service to families in need on that day.
Another annual event at Christmas Time is our Family Christmas Party. This year we fed about 90 people and gave out a boxed gift, which included food items, toiletries, hats, gloves, scarves and
toys. We also had a surprise visit from Old Saint Nick.
